How to put photos inside bevelled and embossed text, using GIMP, the free image editor. For this tutorial you will also need to install the Layer Effects plugin here: http://registry.gimp.org/node/186 – if use Windows and you have GIMP 2.8 then use the .py version of the plugin. Copy and paste the layerfx2.8.py and put it in your c:usersyourusername.gimp-2.8plug-ins then quit and restart gimp. If you have an older version of GIMP (2.6 or less) and don’t have python, then use the .scm version and copy and paste it into your scripts folder at c:usersyourusername.gimp-2.6scripts then quit and restart gimp.
Special Note for Users of GIMP 2.8 – you will not be able to use “TEXT TO SELECTION” as shown in this video – you must use “ALPHA TO SELECTION” instead – it does exactly the same thing. This is because this tutorial was made using an older version of GIMP.
Special Note for Mac Users – if you are having trouble using the “Delete” key to erase the selection, then please click Edit…Clear instead. It does the same thing.
Saving Images in GIMP – to save your image in GIMP (any version) click File, then Save. Then save your XCF file. You will need that if you ever want to re-edit the image.
For GIMP 2.6 (or older versions) – to export into other formats click File, then Save As, give your file a new name and end with the extension you require (such as .jpg).
For GIMP 2.8 – to export into other formats click File, then Export, then contine as per instructions above for GIMP 2.6
A website called GimpShop.com has been using this video on their website’s tutorial pages to promote downloading of a hacked version of GIMP which I do not endorse. There have been several reports that they are distributing a virus infected version of GIMP. I strongly advise you not to download anything from that site. Stay safe, only get GIMP from the official website at http://www.gimp.org
